Uganda Trip to See Gorillas
Uganda was perhaps the most beautiful of the countries we visited. As we approached the western side, it became more mountainous and scenic, but also much more remote. The Inpenetrable Forest, a world heritage site, is adjacent to gorilla preserves in the Congo and Rwanda.
We arrived at Entebbe on the shores of Africa’s largest lake, Lake Victoria and spent our first night there. The next day, we travelled with 2 Australians and an American through the Uganda capital (Kampala) and across the equator to Mbarara. We passed cassava (starchy staple) and banana plantations , herds of Ankole longhorn cattle, rural towns and life, all on terrible roads. Our stay in Kampala was very interesting, from the street and commercial life to the abundance of Marabu Storks (very homely) hanging around the city. The rest went swimmimg in the hotel pool while I took photographs of kingfishers fishing and an abundance of other birds right by the hotel. The next morning we travelled to the mountains of western Uganda over even worse roads. We passed schools with uniformed children, chain gangs working, overloaded trucks, bikes and beautiful hills/mountains. Along the way, we stopped to fix a tire, and found ourselves an attraction. Apparently they didn’t see many whites in western Uganda but unlike the rest of the trip, they kept their distance and just observed these strange people.
