Covered by hills, the farmland in Palouse County WA becomes an abstract canvas painted by farmers each season with trails, swaths and contrasting crops. Every field in sight from the Steptoe Butte lookout has a unique irregular border.

This hill in Palouse County WA appears like an abstract painting. Seem familiar? In earlier years Microsoft used an opening screen very similar to this for several versions of its software.

Seaweed and Rock Collage
Rocks polished by ocean tides intermingle with sea debris create interesting patterns and colours.
Arrival of Fall
The crisp fresh air and changing colours of this Dogwood bush signal the arrival of fall in the Rocky Mountain foothills.
Soon to be Covered
The first snowflakes of winter herald the arrival of coming snowfalls. Soon the beauty of these branches, lichen and moss will be buried beneath layers of white snow creating a new, and just as beautiful landscape.
Gentle curves, contrasting textures and physical elements (wood, snow, rock, water sun, & shadows) all contribute to this winter art.. Taken on the Ice Field Parkway.
Winter Tear Drops
A layer of ice forms along of the Bow River during frigid weather. As temperatures start to rise the fast current undercuts the ice and odd-shaped icicles from the slowly melting snow form along the edge.
With some imagination these odd-shaped icicles and their reflection look like a set of teeth. This is a fleeting moment in nature as conditions have to be just right and only last for a short time
The icicles on this point caught coloured light from the fading sunrise and reflected it onto the river.
Taken with a 10mm fisheye, this overhang looks like a stone artichoke heart.
Being hand held, at 1/40 of a second shutter speed produced this lacey flow with each drop registering a glimmering streak as it splashes down the fall.
Sheep River Falls
A close up view shows drops spashing off the falls. They catch the sun and contrast against the shadows and colour above.
A Moment in Flight
This raven was photographed in the instant just before lift-off. The motion is captured in his wings and tail while the head and body has yet to move.
Forest Fire Timber
This colourful stand of dead trees lie in front of the mountain telling the tale of a past forest fire.
A controlled burn just inside the Banff Park Gates left this view. The contrast between the snow and burnt timber highlights the gullies as if it is a pencil rendering. At first glance this picture appears to be a "Black & White" photo. As the foreground attests, this is actually a colour photo.
Frozen in Time
Time seems to be frozen with only fence poles, snow and wind exposed ice appearing in the landscape. In contrast as spring arrives, this pond just south of Calgary will become a picture of activity
Moss growing on a fallen tree in the mountain wilderness leaves a feeling of being one alone with nature..... only to be betrayed by a single nail. A contrast of worlds!
Even when dead, this fallen tree adjacent to a Yellowstone Park geyser, provides beauty and awe to the landscape.
Frigid temperatures form icy edges along a pool. Most of the pond stays open even in this fridgid weather due to the hot water expelled from the geyser.
A steam vent exits into a pool of crystal clear water.
What appears to be a landscape from an airplane is really a 10' high view of a geyser run-off. The vivid colors of lining this flow are the result of pigmented organisms in the microbial mats that grow around the edges of the mineral-rich water.
Vivid colours and textures provide interest around hot springs and geysers.
Vertical movement with a slower shutter speed create an abstract view of tree trunks against the snow.
Abstract Forest #2
Heavy snowfall followed by mild temperatures form pillow-like tops on bridge and pathway rails.
Hint of Old Faithful
The moon provides back-light to the moving clouds. On the valley floor, Old Faithful continues to emit some steam, after the main eruption .

There were several of these single flowers in bloom in the water. The colour and design of the water makes a plesant abstract centred on a realistic bloom. Thanks for Melodie for spotting this gem.
